How it works

Formatting uses JSON.parse() to build a native JavaScript object, then JSON.stringify(obj, null, indent) to re-serialize it with your chosen indentation. Minification follows the same parse step but passes no indent argument, producing the most compact representation. Validation runs only the parse step and reports the browser's native error message on failure, which usually includes the position of the syntax error.

Frequently asked questions

Why should I format JSON?

Minified JSON is harder to read when debugging. Formatted JSON with consistent indentation lets you quickly see the structure, spot missing commas or brackets, and review nested data. It also makes git diffs far more readable when JSON files are committed to source control.

When is JSON minification useful?

Minified JSON reduces file size, which lowers bandwidth costs and speeds up API responses. For large datasets sent over the wire, removing whitespace can reduce payload size by 10–30%. It is common practice to pretty-print JSON in development and minify it in production builds.

What is the difference between 2-space and 4-space indentation?

Both are valid — it is purely a style preference. 2-space indentation is common in JavaScript projects. 4-space is common in Python and many style guides. Tab indentation lets each developer choose their visible width in their editor.

Can I use this tool for large JSON files?

Yes, up to the limits of your browser's memory. For files above a few megabytes, pasting into a textarea becomes slow. In those cases, use a CLI tool like `jq . file.json` or a dedicated JSON editor with streaming support.
