The slug generator applies these transformations in order: (1) Unicode normalization using .normalize('NFD') decomposes accented characters into base letter + combining diacritic, then the diacritics are stripped. (2) Non-alphanumeric characters are replaced with the chosen separator. (3) Duplicate separator runs are collapsed. (4) Leading and trailing separators are removed. (5) Case transformation is applied. (6) The slug is truncated at the max length, ensuring it does not end with a separator.
Hyphens (-) are the Google-recommended separator for URL slugs. Google's John Mueller confirmed that Google treats hyphens as word separators, while underscores (_) are treated as connectors (making "my_post" read as "mypost"). Dots can cause confusion with file extensions.
Best practice is to keep slugs under 60 characters. Shorter slugs are easier to share, less likely to be truncated in social media previews, and often rank slightly better in search results. Remove stop words (a, an, the, of, in, etc.) to shorten slugs without losing meaning.
Yes for Latin-script languages with diacritics (French, Spanish, German, Portuguese, etc.) — accents are stripped and the base letter is preserved. For languages using non-Latin scripts (Chinese, Arabic, Japanese, Cyrillic), the characters are replaced with separators, leaving a minimal slug. For those languages consider transliteration before slugifying.
