How it works

Every password is generated using crypto.getRandomValues() — the browser's cryptographically secure random number generator backed by the OS entropy pool. This is the same source of randomness used by password managers and cryptographic libraries. Unlike Math.random(), it cannot be predicted or seeded by an attacker. Each random 32-bit integer is mapped to a character in the selected charset via modulo reduction. No passwords are ever sent to a server.

Frequently asked questions

How long should my password be?

For most accounts, 16 characters with all character types enabled is considered strong. For high-value accounts (banking, email, password manager master password), 20+ characters is recommended. Longer is always better — each additional character multiplies the search space exponentially.

Why exclude ambiguous characters?

Characters like 0 (zero), O (capital-O), l (lowercase-L), 1 (one), and I (capital-i) look nearly identical in many fonts. When you need to read or type a password by hand — for example on a TV remote or a kiosk — excluding them prevents costly mistakes.

Is this better than using my browser's built-in password generator?

Browser password generators are also secure. The advantage of this tool is customization: you can control the exact length, character sets, exclude ambiguous characters, and generate multiple passwords at once for review. The underlying random source is the same.

What makes a password "Very Strong"?

This tool rates a password Very Strong when it is 20 or more characters long and uses all four character types (uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols). At that length and entropy level, brute-force attacks would take longer than the age of the universe even with specialized hardware.
