How it works

The calculator counts every calendar day in the range (start and end inclusive), subtracts weekend days (Saturday and Sunday), then subtracts any public holidays that fall on a weekday. US Federal holiday rules apply the observed date — if a holiday falls on Saturday, the prior Friday is the observed day; if it falls on Sunday, the following Monday is observed. UK bank holidays use Monday substitution for both Saturday and Sunday. All calculations run entirely in your browser using JavaScript's built-in Date API — no data is sent to any server.

Frequently asked questions

Are start and end dates both counted?

Yes — the range is inclusive on both ends. If you pick Monday June 2 to Friday June 6, that is 5 working days.

Does this cover all states and regions for US holidays?

The tool uses the 11 US federal public holidays. State and local holidays (e.g. Cesar Chavez Day in California, Patriots Day in Massachusetts) are not included. Use the "Custom dates" preset to add any regional holidays specific to your area.

What UK holidays are included?

England and Wales bank holidays: New Year's Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Early May Bank Holiday, Spring Bank Holiday, Summer Bank Holiday, Christmas Day, and Boxing Day. Scottish and Northern Irish holidays (e.g. St Andrew's Day, Orangemen's Day) differ — add them as custom dates.

How do I use this for sprint planning?

Set the sprint start date, set the end date to the last day of the sprint, pick your team's holiday calendar, and subtract any team member time-off (use the remaining result as an input to your capacity planner). For 2-week sprints with a typical 8-person team and US holidays, expect 9–10 working days in most sprints.
